Design & Build Brief: New Tartan 27 Cruiser

Opportunities to carry forward the tradition and legacy of a historic brand are rare, sometimes they come only once in a lifetime. Serving as stewards of the beloved Tartan Yachts name is a responsibility our team of designers and artisans never takes lightly. It fueled a relentless pursuit of the answers to the questions that mattered most: What built Tartan's legacy? What has drawn generations of families to the brand? And what must we do to earn that same trust for the next 65 years?

The culmination of that quest is reflected in the lines and spirit of the new Tartan 27.

The design direction for this new Tartan was inspired by the original Tartan 27, a Sparkman & Stephens design first built in 1961. The original being known for its masthead sloop rig, keel-centerboard underbody, moderate proportions, and compact cruising utility. The new design preserves that legacy while applying modern composite construction, refined hydrodynamics, contemporary systems, and improved ergonomics for today’s sailor.

Undemanding Sail Handling

The Tartan 27’s exterior is defined by an intentionally uncluttered deck plan that prioritizes simplicity, safety, and confidence under sail. A self-tacking jib system and thoughtfully organized control lines allow crews to adjust and respond with minimal effort, keeping the experience focused on sailing rather than managing hardware.

Classic Profile with Modern Purpose

A graceful sheer line, balanced proportions, and clean coachroof design give the Tartan 27 its unmistakable silhouette. The opening transom extends both function and freedom, making boarding, swimming, and dinghy access effortless while reinforcing the connection to life on the water.

Inherited Integrity

Every line of the Tartan 27 reflects a direct connection to its lineage, preserving the spirit of the original model while refining it for contemporary expectations. Balanced proportions, detailing, and restraint create a yacht that will remain visually relevant for decades, reinforcing pride of ownership and long-term desirability.

Advanced Construction

Modern vacuum-infused composites, structural cores, and engineered bonding deliver a hull and deck that are lighter, stronger, and more consistent. The result is enhanced durability, improved stiffness, and long-term structural integrity that supports both performance and longevity.

Short-Handed Confidence

Designed with real-world sailing in mind, the yacht excels when handled by one or two people. Sail controls are logically arranged, the rig is forgiving, and the self-tacking configuration reduces workload, allowing owners to sail more often with less complexity and greater enjoyment.

Manageable Performance

With a powerful yet controlled sail plan, the Tartan 27 delivers engaging performance without demanding constant adjustment or expert-level trimming. It rewards active sailing while remaining accessible, making it equally suited for learning, cruising, or spirited club racing.

There are moments on the water that never announce themselves as extraordinary. They arrive quietly. Mornings filled only with the sound of water slipping past the hull. Afternoons of children experiencing the power of the wind for the first time, their laughter echoing across the cockpit. Evenings with the embrace of a cool breeze that fills the sails while the sky burns with color. Years later, these are the moments that remain.

The Tartan 27 is a yacht that encourages you to sail simply because you can, to linger a little longer, to take the long way home, and to share the experience with the people who matter most. Its intimate scale creates a closeness to the water and to one another. Time slows aboard a boat like this. Conversations last longer, sunsets seem richer, and ordinary afternoons become family traditions.

Every detail of the Tartan 27, from its beautifully crafted interior to its effortless sail handling and timeless lines, has been thoughtfully designed to increase the frequency of these cherished moments.

Responsive Steering

The Tartan 27 is engineered to deliver predictable handling and reassuring stability across a wide range of conditions. The tiller provides exceptional feedback, allowing even subtle changes in wind and water to be felt through the helm, making the yacht both engaging for experienced sailors and confidence-inspiring for those building their skills.

Accessible Experience

Gratifying for both novice and seasoned sailors. From systems layout to maintenance considerations, the yacht is designed to be straightforward and approachable for a wide range of sailors. This accessibility encourages more time on the water, fewer barriers to departure, and a deeper connection between owner and boat.

Within Reach

Purposefully scaled to lower the barriers to ownership while preserving the craftsmanship, performance, and refinement found throughout the fleet, the 27 delivers a true luxury sailing experience in a more attainable package. Smaller by design, yet every bit a Tartan, the 27 opens the door for first-time owners, returning sailors, and anyone seeking extraordinary sailing.

Built to Be Sailed

The Tartan 27 removes the barriers that keep owners ashore by being straightforward and approachable. The manageable size, intuitive systems, and confidence-inspiring handling encourage owners to cast off whenever the opportunity arises while remaining capable for coastal exploration and unparalleled weekend escapes.

Remarkably Voluminous

Below deck, the main salon maximizes every inch of the 27-foot platform. Large ports and carefully placed joinery create a sense of luxury and capacity that exceeds expectations for the size, while the layout supports both comfortable seating, standing headroom, and easy passage through the cabin.

Integrated Accommodations

The interior layout balances practicality with comfort through intelligently integrated sleeping and service spaces. A forward V-berth provides flexible accommodations, while the generous aft cabin with double berth and ample headroom supplies privacy for sleeping or changing. The L-shaped galley and enclosed head are positioned for efficiency without intrusion.
